SHUT UP AND SING: Rewind & Reflect with Barbara Kopple

In celebration of Upstate Art Weekend, the Woodstock Film Festival and CPW present a special presentation of SHUT UP AND SING - a groundbreaking 2006 documentary that still resonates today—followed by a Q&A with Academy Award-winning director Barbara Kopple.

Nearly two decades later, this bold and resonant documentary remains as timely as ever—chronicling the Dixie Chicks’ (now The Chicks) fight for free expression after their controversial political stance in 2003. Through the lens of music, media, and backlash, Kopple crafts a fierce portrait of resilience, artistry, and speaking truth to power. WFF proudly featured this as the Closing Night Film in 2006.

Join us for an evening that sparks conversation and celebrates the enduring power of art to challenge, provoke, and inspire.

  • Upstate Films: Orpheum Theatre (Saugerties) (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

Join us for a special sneak peek of HIS THREE DAUGHTERS before its theatrical release on Sept 6th and Netflix release on Sept 20th.

ABOUT THE FILM: From writer-director Azazel Jacobs (French Exit, The Lovers) comes this bittersweet and often funny story of an elderly patriarch and the three grown daughters who come to be with him in his final days. Katie (Carrie Coon) is a controlling Brooklyn mother dealing with a wayward teenage daughter; free-spirited Christina (Elizabeth Olsen) is a different kind of mom, separated from her offspring for the first time; and Rachel (Natasha Lyonne) is a sports-betting stoner who has never left her father’s apartment — much to the chagrin of her half-sisters, who share a different mother and worldview. Continuing his astute exploration of family dynamics in close-knit spaces, Jacobs follows the siblings over the course of three volatile days, as death looms, grievances erupt, and love seeps through the cracks of a fractured home.
